Brendan Fraser says he’s getting back into shape for new The Mummy movie

Brendan Fraser confirms The Mummy return and says cast is “getting the band back together”.

Brendan Fraser is dusting off Rick O’Connell’s boots again.

The actor has confirmed that he’s returning for a new installment of the The Mummy franchise, more than two decades after first starring as the wisecracking adventurer in Universal’s hit action series.

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Fraser said the cast is “getting the band back together” as work begins on the upcoming sequel.

“Well, we’re gonna get the band back together,” Fraser said. “The only way to do it. So, we are going to give the audience what they have been bothering all of us for, for the last twenty-whatever years.”

The Oscar winner also hinted that the new movie will revisit familiar territory from the earlier films, although he stopped short of revealing plot details.

“I was hopeful for a long while, and then I was like, ‘I don’t know if they are.’ Then other Mummy movies got made,” he explained. “But listen, what we’re gonna do is saddle back up, go back to the locations — I should probably stop talking like this, because I don’t want to give everything away.”

Fraser then joked about preparing physically for another round of action scenes.

“However, please wish me luck. I’m doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape,” he added.

According to reports published in February, Fraser and Rachel Weisz are both set to return for the fourth film in the franchise. The project is being developed by Radio Silence, with David Coggeshall writing the script. Universal has reportedly scheduled the film for release on May 19, 2028.

Fraser first appeared as Rick O’Connell in 1999’s The Mummy opposite Weisz’s Evelyn Carnahan. The pair reunited for The Mummy Returns in 2001, which became another box office success for the studio.

Although Fraser returned for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Weisz did not reprise her role in the third movie.

Maria Bello instead stepped in as Evelyn for the 2008 sequel.
